Imposter Syndrome in the Blogging World
I really love seeing OOTDs on Instagram.
I'm always blown away. Especially by the women who take photos in their bedroom mirror.
A perfect, usually vintage, floor mirror leaning against a perfect wall, with their beautiful and impeccable neat bedroom or closet reflecting gloriously in the background.
Not to mention their outfit is always on point, their hair is perfect, their makeup meticulous....You picking up on a theme here? I don't have the space for such a mirror in my apartment, I barely have enough space for my clothes, leaving the background messy and crowded and therefore not perfect enough to share.
The word that keeps reappearing: perfect.
This is more of my reality. I've been unemployed for nearly a year now and my industry is potentially looking at not returning to "normalcy" until 2022, maybe, so I've been staying on and off with my family. Our house is under construction. My photo background is my childhood bedroom filled with random items from our house that needed a spot while being renovated. My no-heat curl trick didn't work. The shoes I wanted for this outfit are back in my NYC apartment. So in my head: this photo is so far from perfect.
But why is that a bad thing? If you go to most established bloggers and influences, and they ask their followers what they want to see, what is their response?
"More behind the scenes!"
"Your day to day!"
"Your daily life!"
People want to see the real aspect. And this is my real: my hair got messed up, yeah, they're not the "right" shoes, and there is a microwave next to me in my bedroom lol.
People might click for a pretty photo but they stay for authenticity. So as long as what you are putting out is really you, that is what resonates with people. And that is why I started this hobby.
So I shared this photo anyway. And guess what? I still got likes. I got a lot of sweet comments. I got some new followers. And the world didn't end. (gasp!)
No one is perfect. But if you never start, you'll never get better. So goodbye, impostor syndrome! You're not welcome here.
